Why Gas?

At MEMAN, our advocacy for cleaner fuel is driven by a commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and energy efficiency. Natural gas, specifically Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) offer significant advantages over traditional fuels. CNG and LPG are cleaner and more efficient, reducing harmful emissions and contributing to better air quality. Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs), designed to run on CNG or LPG, are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, emitting lower levels of pollutants and offering reduced operating costs.

Nigeria, with its abundant natural gas reserves, holds a unique position in the global energy landscape. With over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves, the country has the potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance energy security through the development of the Auto Gas sector. By promoting the adoption of NGVs and investing in the necessary infrastructure, Nigeria can leverage its natural gas wealth to achieve sustainable development and reduce its carbon footprint.

At MEMAN, we are dedicated to championing the use of natural gas as a cleaner, more efficient fuel option for Nigeria’s transportation sector. Through our advocacy and initiatives, we aim to foster a future where natural gas plays a central role in powering vehicles, reducing emissions, and ensuring a greener, healthier environment for all.

MEMAN is dedicated to advancing the Gas sector in Nigeria

Through our Competency Centre, MEMAN is committed to supporting our members, the industry, and Nigeria towards increased adoption of natural gas in the downstream sector.

MEMAN has set up a Gas Committee and has taken decisive steps in establishing a gas initiative.

The objectives of the Gas committee include:

  • Driving Implementation.
  • Policy Advocacy.
  • Stakeholder Management.
  • Capacity Development.
  • Public Awareness Campaign.

Current Activities

  • Engaged with government, decision makers, and public to address issues in gas value chain: gas pricing, operational safety, insufficient gas supply, autogas demand, high infrastructure and financing costs, public knowledge.

  • Held key stakeholder engagements: Gas stakeholder forum, gas committee roundtable discussion, review of draft standards, mobility CNG roundtable discussion.

  • Conducted capacity development: Online press training on Auto Gas with NLPGA (57 attendees), CNG operational safety workshop (129 attendees).
  • Launched public awareness campaigns with media houses: TVC, NTA, Major Waves; weekly social media awareness series.

Our Partnerships

Collaborated with key stakeholders

MEMAN has collaborated with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Petroleum (Gas), NMDPRA, SON, Decade of Gas, PCNGI, GACN, NLPGA, and NGA, to promote natural gas usage and address industry challenges.

This collaboration involved aligning policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, drafting safety standards, supporting long-term gas utilization visions, promoting CNG adoption, improving gas aggregation and distribution, and advocating for policy changes and public awareness.

Outlook Ahead

MEMAN plans to continue its advocacy and stakeholder management by signing additional collaborative MOUs and engaging more stakeholders to support retail gas adoption. Future capacity development initiatives include collaborating with stakeholders for more events, such as workshops and training sessions. Public awareness efforts will persist, with plans for additional media campaigns and social media posts.

The implementation phase will see more infrastructure projects, including CNG and LPG addon stations. MEMAN aims to enhance demand growth by further engaging states and stakeholders for the adoption of autogas vehicles and developing training programs for drivers and handlers. Funding initiatives will focus on securing investments for CNG retail infrastructure development.

Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted quarterly to track progress and identify areas for improvement. Periodic evaluations and assessments will be carried out, and accomplishments will be documented along with areas needing enhancement. MEMAN’s ultimate goal is to foster a sustainable and efficient gas sector in Nigeria.
